The Atlantic Canada Council on Addiction has developed a step-by-step guide to assist workplaces in addressing problematic substance use.
Problematic Substance Use that Impacts the Workplace: A Step-by-Step Guide & Toolkit to Addressing It in Your Business/Organization provides tools and supports for each phase in the process of addressing problematic substance use in the workforce.
More specifically, the resource includes:
- A section describing problematic substance use and its impact in the workplace, including health, safety, legal and cost issues;
- A list of signs and symptoms;
- Steps to conduct a needs assessment, develop a drug and alcohol policy, educate employees, train supervisors, provide supports, and evaluate the process/program; and
- Tools and checklists, dos and don’ts, and sample wording that can easily be adapted to suit a particular organization and community.
The guide is available in both English and French. The printed version is accompanied by a CD; the cost for printed copies depends on the number of copies ordered. For more information about ordering the guide, email
