Workshops

Four workshops were offered on each day of the three-day Institute. The workshop topics were driven by the focus of the day—assessment, treatment or aftercare—and set in one of four contexts: women, First Nations, offenders or concurrent disorders. The workshops are described briefly in the NSI 2010 Program Guide.

Workshops topics and leaders were:

  • Gender Considerations in Assessment; and Women and Aftercare, both led by Gloria Chaim, Deputy Clinical Director in the Child, Youth and Family Program at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH)
  • Cultural Considerations in Assessment; and First Nations and Aftercare, both led by Tobasonakwut Kinew, Anishinaabe Elder (Winnipeg)
  • Assessing Offender Substance Abuse; and Offender Treatment and Aftercare , both led by Dr. John Weekes, A/Director of Correction Service Canada’s Addiction Research Centre (ARC)
  • Concurrent Disorders and Assessment; Concurrent Disorders and Aftercare; and Pharmacology: How Drugs Affect the Mind, Body and Spirit, all led by Dr. Raju Hajela, Director of Health at Upwardly Mobile Inc. (Calgary)
  • Community Reinforcement Approach and Family Training, led by Greg Purvis, Director of Addiction and Mental Health Services, Nova Scotia Department of Health
  • Cognitive-Behavioural Interventions: Theory and Practice, led by Dr. Guy Bourgon, Senior Researcher at Public Safety Canada
  • Motivational Approaches to Treating Addictions, led by Wayne Skinner, Deputy Clinical Director at CAMH
